YES YOU CAN,  I'VE NEVER HUNTED WITH ONE, BUT I DON'T SEE WHY IT WOULDN'T BE A GOOD DEER RIFLE.
JUST MAKE SURE YOU USE HUNTING ROUNDS WITH SOF T POINTS ISTEAD OF THE MILITARY STUFF (CLEANER KILL)    :hello:

My buddy did for a few seasons.  They are a little loud for your hunting buddies if they are nearby.  In cover it would be ok, I wouldn't use one in open country.  Get a bolt gun.

This isn't Nam'. LOL. I had a buddy who used a modern, tricked out AK. He liked it, with a red dot in Western WA. I had another buddy who hunted with a HK91. He got a lot a looks for that one. But they did the job. I can't remember if the REGS say you can only have 10 rounds in a rifle though. Might want to check that out.

I DODN'T THINK THERE IS A RESTRICTION ON AMOUNT OF AMMO YOUR RIFLE HOLDS,  ONLY RISTRICTIONS FOR BURD HUNTING.   YOU CAN HUNT WITH A DRUM MAG IF YOU WANT

My Bro hunted W wa with his AK and a 5 round clip... You can buy good soft points or hollow points... The balistics are similar to a 30-30. Ok brush/close range gun. I think 150yrds and less.  :twocents:

I watched my buddy shoot a deer with a sks once. That thing stood there and took the bullets like they were bb's. I thought he was missing until we skinned the thing. Lead poison would of got him faster. You might want to look into a differnt assualt rifle.

Yugo sks is a fine short/med range deer rifle. If you should run out of ammo you could bayonet charge the deer...or field dress your quarry.... :IBCOOL:
Seriously, if you are able to get respectable groups (2 or 3" @ 100 yds) with quality soft point ammo then you should not be disappointed. I don't recommend Wolf/Tula or similar lower cost plinking HP ammo. Spend a few bucks more on better quality.  I have used Remington Core Lokt SP's and have had real good results.

DevilDoc,  An SKS, which fires a mid sized 30 cal. round, is certainly big enough for midsized game at medium ranges.  The only problem is using military ammo.  It's not designed to expand upon impact, it just  simply passes through the target and, hopefully hit another target.  You can buy American made sporting ammo, however these do raise concerns.  An SKS has a "floating" firing pin and that means everytime the bolt slams forward, the firing pin moves forward with it.  I believe American made sporting ammo uses a "softer" firing pin which is easier to detonate.  This can result in the noted SKS "slamfire".  If this happens your weapon will fire automatically until the magazine is empty.  Search the internet and you'll find detailed descriptions and remedies.  So, I own one and love it and I wouldn't hesitate to hunt with it, however, I installed an aftermarket firing pin in mine.  I wouldn't hunting with military ammo.
